Rules for Raising Healthy Eaters

  • Start early. Begin teaching healthful eating habits as early as possible.
  • Keep it simple. Prepare foods that can be eaten with little fingers.
  • Avoid mixing foods. Let children learn to appreciate foods for their own flavors and textures.
  • Take it slow. Gradually introduce new textures and flavors.
  • Be patient. Understand the child's effort in each new feeding process.
  • Set limits on the types and amounts of food your children eat. Children respond well to limits and rules, and you retain authority over the food in your house.
  • Use spices sparingly. Children reject strong flavors, so hold back on salt, pepper and spices.
  • Watch the temperature. Goldilocks didn't like her porridge too hot or too cold. Neither will your child.
  • Secure cooperation. The entire family should agree on the rules of the kitchen.
  • Examine your own eating habits. Children will model your behavior.
