Going on a date...what to wear?

Hello All-

I'm going on a date with someone who I recently met through a Christian dating sevice. It's been a while since I've been on a date and I'm confused about what I should wear. I want to wear something that's nice and dressy but not look like I'm going on a job interview. I would love to wear a black pantsuit that I wear to work sometimes with an awesome pair of pointy-toed stillettos. Is this OK for a date? I really prefer to wear pants.

Or should I lighten up and go more casual... like a pair of my flared Levis with a pair of high-heeled boots?

I'm even worried about my nails. I have acrylics. I would like to wear a red nail polish but would this be too "suggestive"(long red nails)?. Should I stick with my French Manicure? Don't want to remove my nails.

Sorry to ramble but I'm nervous.

Thanks Ladies!

Hi Cindy!

First of all, congratulations and good luck on your date! :) As a man, please permit me to offer that what's most important is that you feel comfortable; this will reflect in how you come across to your companion. I do like your idea of a black pantsuit and think that adding a splash of color in the form of a pastel sweater or button-down shirt - or a white top with a simple colorful accessory like a necklace, brooch, or a scarf - would be worth considering as well. (As you probably know, we men are visually-oriented; that would give your date something about you to notice without making him fixate on your body at this stage.)

As for nail polish, I think long red nails are only too suggestive if the rest of your look were geared that way as well. For example, red nails with a black suit is a wonderful detail that implies that you're not too stiff or uptight - whereas red nails with a low-cut top, microskirt, and fishnets obviously implies something entirely different. (LOL) So it's the whole package that counts when assembling a look.

For the shoes, you might want to think about something with a shorter heel, depending on your date's height and whether you expect to do much walking. And as a final idea, when you decide on your look, it would be a good idea to communicate this in advance of the date (i.e. "I'll be wearing a black suit with a lavender sweater") so that he can prepare himself accordingly. (This way you'll know how seriously he takes the date based on his appearance. If he knows you're going to make a sincere effort to look nice and he still dresses down for the occasion, this will speak volumes about him.)

I hope my opinion is helpful - let us know how it turns out! :) Hugs,

Chris made some great points, and very valid ones. Especially about the shoes. If you can hike for miles in stillettos more power to you, I know I can't. The other thing to take into account is where you are going for your date. The black suit might be too formal for some places, so something more casual would be a better choice, if you are going somewhere dressy it sounds perfect.
Red nails are fine, if you are comfortable with them, they don't mean anything more than you like the color, or how your nails look with that color. French manicures are great for work, but they are rather bland.
Have a great time.

Just wanted to let you know I had a nice time on my date last Saturday night. We went to a really nice restaurant and then a late movie afterwards.

I did dress in the nice pantsuit I mentioned earlier due to the formality of the date. I wore my 3.5in thin heels and they looked super with my outfit and were comfortable all night long. He liked my outfit and I thought I noticed him checking out my shoes though it was not that easy to see them.

I went with a french manicure to be a little more understated but he loved my nails!

It was a great night.

Thanks All,
Cindy
