what do i wear for a wedding?

I can dress myself for everyday events, but when it comes to weddings I am totally clueless. I am going to an evening wedding which I know tends to be more formal. I don't really know the people getting married well (my fiancee's co-worker) but from what I understand it is going to be quite an event. I know that at one time there was a "rule" against wedding black to a wedding, but the weddings I have been to recently black was probably the most popular color with women. And its a good thing too, because I looked EVERYWHERE for a dress and the only two I could find that fit decent had a lot of black. I have posted a link to the first one below, this one is pure white on the top and that used to be a no-no, but I don't know if it matters with the style of the dress. The style isn't bridal at all or anything, and its not all white. I typically wear a size 14/16, this one was a 14 and was a little tight but I think if I watch what I eat I should be o.k., but is it approriate for a wedding? If not, where do I wear this dress? The other dress I could not find a picture for. It is a Jones New York Dress, the style is called Canary Islands. It is all black. The dress itself is very simple, no patterns, etc. Its just all plain black fabric, around the waist it is a band of black satin, maybe 2 or 3 inches wide. It has a plunging neckline. And the back is pretty low too. The top is like a halter top style. I see no possible way to wear a bra with this dress, I almost don't think I need to (actually I don't think I would need a bra in the other one either....is this normal for formal dresses? I have size c boobs and there isn't a built in bra, but maybe just the way these are cut.). Anyhow, I don't typically where stuff this low cut, its probably right down to where the middle of your bra would normally be, but doesn't really show much, just a slice of skin. Its about knee length. Is this an O.K. dress for a wedding? I bought both of them because the wedding is Sat and I won't have time to go dress shopping again. If the plunging neck one is not approriate, I will find another use. Its is much more low cut than anything I have ever worn before, but as I said I am a size 14/16 and you really never notice my waist in this sucker because of the neckline. Its very flattering. I would probably wear some sort of strappy shoe with that one, do I need hose? I know its formal, but is that required? By the way, I am 25 years old, my hair is pretty short, a very flipped up look in the back (its probably about an inch to an inch and a half long) so its a kind of a fun hairstyle, probably would go better with the dress I can't find a picture of. I forgot to ask, do you people just wear whatever color shoes they want with a plain black dress? What colors are good to go with, I know everything goes with black, but what just looks awesome with it? I probably just need a purse shoes and some jewelry. Thanks for all of your help.

The top portion of the dress is a bit like this, except instead of that gap between the pieces of fabric that cover her breasts, on my dress they kind of cross over a little bit instead, the bottom portion of my dress is much simpler, no folds, etc of any kind. Thanks.

Both dresses sound fine for the wedding. I don't think there is a rule about weddings and wearing black anymore. DH and I went to one for a good friend of mine last summer and the bridesmaids wore black dresses. If you are comfortable with the styles then pick the one you like best and go for it. Have a great time!

I have a similar question! I am going to a wedding in 2 weeks and I have this really cute dress that I want to wear, but the poterntial problem is that it is white, but has a floral print. I know you can't wear all white to a wedding, but is it ok if there's a pattern on it? The flowers are like, a blue-teal. It's a great dress, I just do'n't want to make a fashion faux pas!!! I always have my little black dress to fall back on I guess. Can anyone help??

Thanks, Josie

I think a lot of the fashion rules for weddings have gone by the board, including the no white for guests rule, although I think most of us wouldn't wear white just because it is reserved for the bride. Actually white for the bride hasn't been around as long as you would think.
I can't see any reason why you shouldn't wear your dress, it isn't all white, which is the real no-no, a print on a white background is fine.
Have a great time.

Both dresses sound great. As to shoes, black is probably best, but you coild wear pink or beige or pale blue, just about anything. But please, please, even if the shoes are strappy sandals, wear stockings. I believe this ridiculous trend of going bare legged, even in the snow, is on it's way out. I think Catie Couric looks so unprofessional with her bare legs. As I love the dramatic, I would wear a pair of short tight black kid gloves, but that's just Me. Have a great time knowing you are looking fabulous.

That white dress with the teal flowers sounds very pretty and there's no reason why you couldn't wear that to a wedding.
