Washing your hair without shampoo

Hi everyone,

Several of my friends are starting to not use shampoo when washing their hair. They basically just rinse it out daily. Supposedly it is better for your hair and helps it grow faster, reduces split ends and helps keep your natural color longer. Is anyone trying this? How long have you gone without shampoo? How do you keep your hair from stinking?

I would love to hear people's thoughts.

I don't know. My hair smells if I go one day without washing it. But I do know that people use apple cider vinegar and baking soda so you're not using just water. But still, I prefer my Head and Shoulders. :)

It seems like I somehow made a volcano with vinegar and baking soda when I was in grade school. lol I can't imagine putting it on my head. Wouldn't the baking soda be as harsh on your hair as shampoo?

I read more and more that the shampoo strips your hair's natural oils out, so not to do it as often, and just condition it. I don't watch my hair every day, I do about every other day, but I also use hair products in my hair and I am not going to just rinse it, it won't take out the products and they will build up.

I have read about others not using shampoo or using alternative cleanser for hair.  However, I shampoo my hair everyday, sometimes twice, and never have a problem with split ends, hair loss, etc.   Therefore I will keep using shampoo.

Everybbody is different.  I would say try going without shampoo for a while if that's what you want and see if it works.  If not, go back to shampoo.  BTW, when you mix baking soda, an alkaline material, with vinegar, an acid, you bascially neutralize it (if mix in the right proporttion).  I don't think it is going to be particularly harsh to your hair.

Funny, after I commented on this I came across a blog post all about it, it also has a link to some Q&A about it, its pretty interesting.
