where to part hair before cutting

I have thick hair...just below the shoulder....styled for the tips to curl in toward my neck all around...
i am disabled and need something easy. i can't use a brush and blow dryer at the same time to style. i have to dry first then brush. if i air dry it takes more than 4 hours and dries all clumpy and out of control.
it took me a long time to find someone who could cut my hair evenly......but I have one concern.
she insists on parting it in the middle before cutting. i ALWAYS part it on the right...a fairly dramatic part.
what ends up happening is that there is always an obvious very short layer when i brush it over to the left.....because the strands that start out on the right have been cut to be even with a middle part.
i also seem to have to pull the back of my hair from the middle of my head straight back---or it curls in funny directions on the sides
she is the owner of a very successful salon and is very experienced....but it seems to me that hair should be parted for the cut in the same area as it will be worn.
