Would you ask a stranger what perfume they're wearing?

If you're in a public place and get a whif of someone's perfume and want to know what it is, do you ask them? I don't suppose I'd mind if someone asked me, but I'm too shy to do it myself. Is it rude? Have you ever stopped someone and asked, not just perfume, but say, if you loved their boots or something, would you ask where they got them?

Yes, I would about their fragrance--in fact I've done it a couple of times in the past. I would probably ask someone about their shoes or other article of clothing, or even who does their hair. I see it as complimenting their style although I suppose that some people might think you're wanting to copy their style.
My dd lives in NYC and she's told me that its not uncommon there to ask or be asked about your clothes, hairstyle etc. by total strangers on the street or subway.
