Survey says... E-books spur reading among Americans

E-books appear to be promoting reading habits among American adults, according to new research from the Pew Internet and American Life Project According to this report, about one-fifth of U.S. adults have read an e-book in the past year and if you include Americans over 16 who have used an e-reader device or app to read news articles or magazine-style features, the figure jumps to 43%. The survey also points out that e-book users tend to read more often than people who read only print material-- In particular, they read more books. A typical e-book user read 24 books in the past year, compared with the 15 books reported by typical non-e-book users. Hmm... judging from the number of book reviews I see all you ladies sharing, you're all way above the norm! LOL

Seriously though... do those of you with e-readers find you're reading more books than before? I know I am, simply because so many of the free books I snag are shorter books than those I tend to borrow from the library. And because I can change the font size on my e-reader, I'm back to reading in bed again. :smileytongue:

Theoretically, my husband and I share a kindle.

Really, what happens is that he reads it a lot. And he watches movies on it a lot. He has read much more since we got the kindle, than he had a similar period last year. Me, I dl "The Gathering," when we first got the thing for Hanukah, a novella by Kelley Armstrong, that I've really been looking forward to reading, but since then it's much easier to pick up a library book or a book from my TBR pile than read the one on the Kindle. I'm reading book #38 or 39 this year, so yeah, it hasn't changed my reading practices at all.

I know I'm reading more often, especially on trips

If my e-reader had a backlight, I would read a lot more! I like to read at night. Now that I found out that our library allows you to check out downloadable audiobooks, I've "read" a lot more in the last week (all 3 Hunger Games audiobooks, and Tina Fey's Bossypants...The Help is queued up next).

I'm reading a little bit more as well.
