I am currently reading an ARC from Feruary 2013, that I got in November called Wash from Margaret Wrinkle. I thought it was YA, but it's not, I don't think. It's about a young/ not so young slave in Tennessee, his white owner and the black woman who takes physical care of both of them. It's set from 1812 to 1823.
I've also read and loved Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein about an American woman transport pilot in England ferrying planes around for the RAF. She gets captured by the Nazis and ends up in Ravensbruck concentration camp. It's a novel but it concerns itself with the real Ravensbruck's Rabbits, girls and young women who were "medically experimented" on. I got it from the library.
Love in the Time of Global Warming by Francesca Lia Block, also an ARC from last year, is a retelling of "The Odyssey" through a dystopian, magical realism, LA lens, that I found trippy and wonderful. I loved it!
Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is about a 15 year girl and her brother and their physically and emotionally abusing Dad in a city in Nigeria. I couldn't put it down. Paperbackswap is where I got this one from 2003. There's another book I read too, but I'm not mentioning it with these others...
Happy Reading in 2014! REad books you like!
