These thoughts are a little spoiler-y, if you care about those things. But it's not a spoiler to say that if you loved The Giver and read Gathering Blue and Messenger you're going to want to read this.

This novel is neatly divided into thirds: the first third is about Claire, Gabe’s birthmother from the world of The Giver, who remembers him, finds ways to be with him and longs for him. She escapes to an unnamed remote village, where she meets Einar who trains her -- over yesars-- to climb the mountain to find Gabe. The third third of the book takes place in the Village where Jonas and Gabe wind up, a village for exiles. The first third is very good, the second and third are less so. Less special, the second portion was set in an high fantasy- like land. The third section was too much about tying things up and resolving. Is this book worth reading; absolutely! Is this one of the best books I’ve read this year; no.
