The river is lonely
This time of year
The cruisers rest in sleep
White sails disappear from view
The roar of speedboats
has suddenly ceased

The wakes have calmed
Tiny ripples in their place
Even the long necked loons
Are far and few between
Their is stillness in the air
A quiet along the shores

As if the river lies in wait
For the Ice Queen to come
Embrace the river's face
With her long frozen arms
Then leave the mighty river
To shiver beneath her iced blanket

Char, I'm ready for the cooler weather, but not for the Ice Queen! Great poem.

Black clouds roll across the water
like tumbleweeds across the prairie
Rain dimples the choppy surface of the lake
as claps of thunder brings us to attention
Lightning flashes onto the deserted beach
Summer bids us farewell

Such punch. Without the picture, I can see it, Char.

Love, love love the third stanza, and the beautiful way you personify the river.

I can see the rain dimpling, the lightning along the beach now void of people. Today I was waving bye as I saw the lounge chairs stacked up on one side of the pool. 'Til next year.
Embrace change.

Forecasting

Brooding clouds blanket the water,
leaving only a third of the sky not covered in halftone.
Three lonely channel markers
cast no shadows;
direct no oil glistening boaters out to the island.

Reading signs of diminishing summer fun,
the film fills, frame by frame,
with the transitional veil of fall.

Embrace change.
