BALMY
Thank you Rose for giving me the oportunity to re-post an old favourite of mine: I
Hi Ray and Rose,
Sorry I'm so late to see this! Rose's definitions got me wondering how #4 was so different from the others. My dictionary says that "barm" is Old English for yeast, and barmy meant frothy, like fermenting yeast. By the 17th century, it was used figuratively to mean flighty, empty-headed, or daft. And balmy is a variant of that. But the other meanings came into English through Romance languages, through the word "balsam".
Dear Jackie, Will I ever tire of thanking you?
