Valentine's Day is upon us again.
There are lifetimes reflected
in this mirror.
Smooth skin hidden by foundation
and a novice hand.
as I tried to apply a straight line
to the bottom of lid.
as I searched for imperfections.
No need to voice the "pretty enough" fears
(we've all been there)
but I never was you know -
pretty enough - for you.
No, you painted your own colors on me,
purples, blues, and greens.
But I never gave my mascara cause to run.
No. Not once.
Today, this mirror finds the start
of fine lines around my mouth
and laugh lines 'round my eyes.
I can see
the flawless skin that was,
no thanks to you,
A fun little detour from my usual stuff.... :-)

MY VALETINE RANT
There are no shining knightsto be found in dusty taverns. No Prince Charming to sweep you awayor merry men to sing sappy songs for you.
No secret gardens where the fairies dance, and no three coins in a fountain where the lovelorn gather making wishes.Put fairytales to rest between the pagesof bedtime storybooks and rhymes.
The glimmer train doesn't pass this way,Cinderella has outgrown her glass slippers.Dorothy's red ruby shoes can't take her homeand Blue Fairy doesn't lie waitingbeneath a deep blue sea to guide those who have lost their way.
There's no magic carpet ride, castles in the skyor angels riding shotgun in the clouds.Dreams don't come true from wishingupon a shooting star andthe elusive butterfly can't bring true love.
Forget happy-ever-after, merry-go-rounds andSally doesn't go 'round pretty roses. The good witch has no magic wand, there's no cupid to shower youwith red hearts and fancy flowers.
Merlin's crystal ball can't fortell your fateand no weeping willow sheds tears for you. There's no genie in a bottle or perfect bliss.Stardust wishes and candyland dreamsare for fools and tiny children.
Wake up Sleeping Beauty, you have slept far too many years. There is no end to a never-ending-story,no swan song left to be sung andthis night grows forever long.
