Jan Berenstain, who with her husband, Stan, wrote and illustrated the Berenstain Bears books that have charmed preschoolers and their parents for 50 years, has died. She was 88.

The first Berenstain Bears book, "The Big Honey Hunt," was published in 1962. ( I had that book!! I read it until it literally fell apart! LOL) Over the years, more than 300 titles have been released in 23 languages. Talk about an amazing career... and their own personal story is just plain sweet! She and her husband met when they were only 18.

Mike Berenstain said his mother worked daily at her home studio in an idyllic part of Bucks County, north of Philadelphia, which served as inspiration for the books' setting. He said he will continue writing and illustrating future Berenstain books.

"Every day she was very productive," he said. "She was working on two books and had been doing illustrations until the day before she passed away."

It's apparent she really loved what she did... and it's great to see that her son, who has been collaborating with her, will continue this great childhood legacy for more generations to come!

I was sad when I read this today. I have such fond memories of reading these books as a child. Better yet, when my boys starting reading, these were the books they love the most. They'd always head to the area of the library that holds the Berenstain Bears books first when we visited. We now own a bunch of the books and videos too. I don't know that I have a favorite. I just love that they are such wholesome books that have lasted for generations.

I remember reading the Berenstein Bears as a child, such a sad loss :( What a gift they've given to children with their books, I'm so glad that her son will be carrying on their legacy. One of my favorites was Trouble with Money.

I saw this on the news last night. My grandson loves the Berenstien Bears, although he is getting a bit old for them.
