Book Club roll call
Fri, 04-04-2014 - 5:38pm

Hi.  I'm sorry I haven't been around- computer issues and stuff going on at work have kept me from being here as much as I'd like.  Many thanks to Julia for keeping things going.

I thought we would have a roll call for the board.  Please post...

Your name/User name-  Shellie/Shelbell3

Your location: (Doesn't have to be specific- whatever you are comfortable disclosing)-  I live with my husband, our three kids and three dogs about 30 minutes north of Los Angeles

Whatever other info you feel like sharing-  When I'm not at work or dealing with my home and family, I write Harry Potter fanfiction.  Someday I aspire to write my own novel.

How do you choose what you read?  It depends.  Sometimes the cover catches my eye or I'll run across a good Nook deal of the day on B&N's website.  Some of my favorite books have been recommendations from friends or fellow boardies.  I found out about Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series from one of my fellow boardies on the old Harry Potter Fans board and my niece sent me one of my other favorites- The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning.

I'm Julia aka Aliciasmom2008

I'm in Upstate New York. (A rural area between Albany & Cooperstown & the Catskills & the Adirondacks.)

I've been working on a novel for over a year which has paranormal aspects, but right now I'm a play and I have to have my lines memorized by Tuesday, make a Seder for twelve, lead it, and clean my house on Monday and somehow find drinkable kosher for Passover wine...

How do I chose what to read? Complicated question. My local public radio station morning guy is hugely into books, and interviews authors, talks about books and once a week has a different indie book seller in to talk about their favorites. So I read some of those. I also get ARCs from Amazon Vine. I pick those based on the description, usually, because it's rare that I see an author there that I've heard of. (I pass my ARCs on to my friends.) At Christmastime I had a dozen books from Amazon and others. I've read them all now, except for the one I'm currently reading. I also try to read what my RL book club picks each month. And what my library features, or patrons are talking about. And I read things that people here have mentioned. And I'm on Goodreads, where I get more recommendations. Rarely I get books from there and Library Thing for a review. So, all over, but you'd be surprised how the same books keep coming up!

 Happy Reading!

Your name/User name- Erin :)

Your location: (Doesn't have to be specific- whatever you are comfortable disclosing)- East Coast/Tri-State Area

I'm an avid reader. I love to read. I read to escape stress and for pure enjoyment. The first books I remember reading and falling in love with were the choose your own adventure books. Then I got into Trixie Belden, The Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High, and then into the HS books, etc.

My tastes have pretty much remained the same over the years. I prefer paranormal, sci-fi, fiction (definitely fiction), YA, mystery, and some light comedy (such as the Psych books or Monk books). I love Twilight — I don't care if it's not well written, the story is what hooked me (sure grammar and spelling will annoy me, but the story helps ignore it). I do love Fifty Shades and all the 'knock offs" of it (I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the Crossfire series). I've never been into that genre, really never read a romance book until that one. Though, no, I did read Lady Boss by Jackie Collins back when I was 12. LOL! I remember buying it my first time ever in a Target while on vacation in California with my great aunt! LOL

How do I choose a book? Usually on recommendations from others, though sometimes I'll see a book mentioned in EW. :)

Jackie/jdonahue1 SW PA Aside from the many series I follow, what I read depends quite a bit on what crosses the desk (I work at a library)
