Lawsuit over High Prices of Concessions

I just read an article that a Michigan man is suing his local theater over the high price of concession snacks: http://www.freep.com/article/20120304/NEWS06/203040519/Filmgoer-takes-stand-on-costly-snacks-sues-AMC-Livonia-theater?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

They are predicting that the case will be dismissed. I do question why theaters are allowed price gouging such as this, why is it acceptable?

Maybe I can shed a little light on the reason concession prices are so high in theatres; my husband and I worked for a theatre chain for years. And it also explains why I seldom go to the movies now days!

When a theatre books a movie to play, the film distributor charges them a rental fee for the film. The distributor sets the price and it's rarely a set fee per movie. With first run movies, they usually want a guarantee of so much per ticket sold... and in many cases, especially if it's a popular movie, that guarantee is the actual

Do you think that they would get more people to go to the movies if concession prices were more reasonable?

I would be there much more often. I mean, the prices by me are $10+ a ticket so paying $20 for popcorn and a soda... uh, no thank you.

And with the prices of stupid 3D movies $9 a pop no matter the time you go or the age of the child...

That's just insane! I need to get a bigger purse and sneak in more treats. Problem is my boys really like the popcorn, lol.

Yep. I hate the prices at the concession stand, so that's why I sneak things in too. But there's something about movie theater popcorn that is just too good! I think the last time we were there, it was $14 for a medium popcorn/drink combo. Craziness! And when I went to the screening for Breaking Dawn, the prices in Chicago were even worse. Like $27 for popcorn and a drink (plus $15 to park in their garage).

The price of consessions are a big factor in why we don't go to the movies very often.

I agree that the price of concessions is just insane! I know that we would be able to see more movies in the theater if the prices were more reasonable. Like you, an afternoon matinee costs us well over $50. More often than not we wait until movies hit the dollar theater where we can buy a ticket and popcorn/drink for everyone for $5. That's much more in line with what we can afford.
