Reaction to Rue's Skin Color?!

Reading the book, I always envisioned Rue as African American. It's even said that she has dark brown skin and eyes. Not sure how that would throw one for a loop, but apparently it has. :(

"While some of the comments are mere surprise, others are more opinionated. 'Why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie,' wrote one moviegoer on Twitter."

I think it's ridiculous that people are complaining about this. And some in a truly racist way.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when I read that article! I thought that Amandla Stenberg was perfect as Rue! Ok, I get that not everyone seeing the movie may have read the book like we did, but still! In a number of the trailers, Rue's character was shown, so how could it have been that big a surprise?

My favorite response to those haters was from another Twitter follower:
"Heads up: if discovering Rue is black 'ruins' the Hunger Games movie for you, you have a lot bigger issues to worry about than casting."

Yep... she said it a lot nicer than I would have. I do like the fact that people were quick to respond to that kind of negative outpouring.

Hi!

Yep, totally agree. It's insane the way people are making it. I get being upset if the character is known to be pale for some reason (ex. Snow White). But for one the book states she has dark skin and two - it really wouldn't matter either way what color skin she has OR what race she is at all. That plays no part in the characters make-up at all. Just as long as she's short, petite and nimble.

And that other tweet is right - bigger issues if this bothers you.

Sheesh.

Wow, if you read the book carefully you wouldn't have missed that part! How can her color ruin the movie for someone, that's pretty insane. Tells you a bit about the character of the person, sounds like they need some enlightening.

I don't get it either. I pictured her dark skin too. I think people are just trying to start something.

Yeah, I agree, jennadnearo. I can't figure it out. So odd that they are *that* mad about it.

Hi, jordansgirl2007. I agree. Some people are just out to look for an issue to stir things up. It's a shame.
