What gets your attention?

My dh will be out of town for a couple days, so, as I usually do, I hit the video store, looking for something to watch in the evenings (you'd think I can't watch a movie when he's here, LOL!)

I didn't have anything special in mind, other than a title I'd heard someone say was good, and I ended up with two movies I'd never heard of, Fourth Story and The Gift. So, what made me choose these out of all the ones I saw? The cast, mostly. At least for one of them. The Gift has tons of big name stars, and it looks like it might be a mystery, so I got it. And Fourth Story? Well, they didn't have the one I was looking for - The 4th Floor - but this was close, lol! Really! That's what first got me to pick it up! Also it looks like a thriller and has a few people I like in it. I'll let you know what I think after I see them.

So, back to my question. When browsing in a video store, what helps you choose what to get, if you don't have anything particular in mind? Is it, like me, a general theme and a good cast, or one star in particular? An interesting cover or synopsis? Something else?

I ussualy pick stuff that I have not heard of, or that seems like it might be artsy, such as The Devil's Playground, which I had not heard of before I rented it and turned out to be a very interesting documentary. Sometimes I ask the clerk at the store for their favorite selection. Plus, it never hurts if there is an attractive person smiling at me on the cover....lol

I guess I go by a bunch of different things. If there is an actor that I really like I might rent it, also if it seems to have a different plot then you usally find. I tend to like movies that are shot different or use a different method then most films.
