Luca: you americans think that given the chance everyone in the world would choose a democracy. (cant remember the next two or so lines)
Carter: We lost lives over in Iraq.
Luca: It is easy to drop bombs when you can then go back to your safe ship or camp. Your children are not dying of starvation. Your women are not being raped. I can remember reading the paper and knowing why we *had* to fight. And then my children were dead and I could no longer remember why it was important.
There was another part where carter was seeing patients and went to this man who was holding a woman and he asked who the patient was. It was the woman - but when carter felt her neck for a pulse, she was dead. Carter asked why he didn't tell them right away when he got there that she was so sick and the man cried b/c she had aids and was really sick and he didn't know where else to go.
Then Carter gets a chance to go to the immunization clinic where luca is in matamba - new doctors had arrived and they had brought supplies. So he goes and is immunizing w/ luca. One boy is in carter's line and he starts coughing really bad. They ask how long and carter listens to his chest and finds out the boy has pertussis. (one of the things they are immunizing for!) And they don't have the right meds to give the boy - only the ampacillin. Later, carter and luca are sitting down and carter says that boy is going to die isn't he? Luca tells him no, but also tells him that they immunized 200 children. When was the last time he saved 200 lives in 1 day? And he gets up and walks off. (also at this time, you can hear the fighting which luca says is about a mile or 2 off. and you can see some smoke across a river or lake or something)
That night carter is sleeping and wakes to music and light (I think). He goes out and there is dancing and carter watches luca and the nurse luca is sleeping w/. Then all of a sudden a bomb or something goes off behind them. And then there is screaming as a mother brings her child who had his foot blown off from the bomb. So they get to work to take care of this boy but it's getting dangerous b/c the fighting is getting really close. They finally get the leg amputated where it needed to be and bandaged and they pick him up and everyone runs out of the clinic to the "old plantation" - a spot in the woods I think that's a distance away from where they were. In the morning, they go back to the clinic and there are soldier bodies everywhere. Apparently there is fighting between some resistance group and the gov't. They find a gov't soldier that is still alive so they take him in the clinic to work on him. After a bit someone says they must leave b/c the soldiers are coming back. Luca refuses to leave but insists that both carter and the nurse he likes leave (even though they want to stay). But while they are getting ready to leave, the resistance soldiers show up and they are pointing guns at everyone. They knock one of the doctors/nurses (someone) to their knees and so they all get down w/ their hands behind their heads. One of the soldiers finds the gov't soldier in the clinic and so now the resistance is really angry. They have tried to tell the resistance they are doctors - show them the red cross type symbol on their truck, their badges, explain in french who they are, etc. But these soldiers are really mad. They at first have the gun at luca's head, then move to carter. That's when the brother says something to the soldier and carter doesn't know what it is. Carter quietly asks what is being said and luca tells him (I think it was luca) that he said carter worked for a very long time to save his brother. carter can't really see this kid b/c the sun is directly behind his head but he looks again and this kid leans over a bit so he's blocking out the sun and carter sees him. The soldier finally drops the gun fromc carter's head but then someone shoots the gov't soldier - several times. And everyone is flinching and jumping from it. The soldiers finally leave and the brother says "merci" to carter (for the work he did on his brother I guess) and carter mumbles "your welcome" and they leave.
Then you see the next scene and carter is waiting in the truck w/ someone else I think and they are waiting on this nurse to finish kissing and saying goodbye to luca. She gets in the jeep and is crying. Carter asks luca what he should tell weaver and luca says I don't know. Carter says something like "well, don't get yourself killed" and they drive off. They show him in the jeep w/ this nurse and she's crying and she lays down in his lap, then the scene changes and you still see him in a car but now it's a taxi. And he's dropped off at abby's apt where he goes in. Walks around and finally looks at abby - he moves her hair off her face I think, kisses her head, sits down on the bed and that's how it ends.
I don't think the nurse will be joining the cast but I could be wrong. But it seems like maybe luca isn't coming back - or at least not for awhile. I think it was a very emotional episode (I was crying at one point - when the child's foot was blown off and the mother and child were screaming). Oh - at one point carter and luca were talking about the war and luca was saying how these people just want the war to end - they don't care how it ends, they just want it to stop. He says how carter and america think it's democracy that needs to be in power but the people just don't care. carter asks what if it's a military dictatorship? And he also gets his back up a bit and says that we had people die in Iraq. But luca points out (and I wish I could remember exactly what he said b/c it was very eye opening) that our soldiers go off to war, our women and children don't starve, get bombed out of our homes, etc. Basically it's easy for us (to both be in a war I think that's not on our own land and also easy to make judgements about what's best b/c we dont' live it). Luca had said that he remembered a time when he watched the news and read the paper and thought that war was a good idea. And then he lost his family and he couldn't remember what it was that was so important about the war. I think overall this was an episode that will affect carter greatly and we'll see changes in him. I also think Luca will decide to stay (even if just for a time) in the COngo and work b/c it made him feel more useful - being in a situation similar probably to Crotia was and actually doing something to help. I thought it was a very engrossing and emotional episode and wish I had taped it so I could watch it again.
Carter decided to go to Africa and help out over there. He got there and Luka was away at another camp helping with immunizations. So, Carter helped out in the little hospital that they had there. There was a young nurse also there and she had been there 10 days already so she showed him the ropes. The other nurse/administrator lady didn't like that nurse because she hit on or slept with all of the doctors. The hospital situation was really bad and Carter worked with it the best he could. Eventually Luka came back to that hospital for more supplies (or something?). He and Carter got a chance to work together for awhile. The went back to their house/hut and the nurse lady was also staying there. She said, "I'm going to bed now. I hope someone will join me". Luka and Carter just sat there. Luka says, "How's Abby?" Carter kinda paused and told him that there's nothing going on between him and that nurse and he's more than welcome to her. So, Luka went to bed with her.
Eventually, Carter went with Luka to the immunization clinic and helped to immunize a bunch of children. There's a war going on and they could hear it all just miles away from them. They were all enjoying the evening with music and dancing (luka and the nurse were dancing nice and close). Then there was some kind of explosion behind Carter and they all had to evacuate and run for cover. They slept out in the woods and they got word that the troops were coming closer and they needed to leave the area. Luka had three patients that couldn't be transported, so he was staying but wanted Carter and the nurse to leave. The nurse was fighting with him about it, because she wanted to stay with him. Then, the troops arrived and everyone had to put their hands behind their heads and get on their knees. They came in and grabbed the wounded soldier that was in the clinic and shot him. They put guns to the temples of Luka and Carter. There was a soldier standing next to Carter and said something to the soldier that had the gun to his head. Because it was in french, Carter didn't understand and asked what they were saying. They told him that the young soldier said that Carter worked on his brother. Carter remembered who he was. His brother had gotten shot, but because of the conditions he was unable to save him. But, the young brother appreciated all that Carter had done, so they didn't kill him.
The soldiers finally left and Luka told Carter and the nurse to leave. As they were leaving, the nurse was very sad and upset about leaving Luka. (I can't help but wonder if they're going to add her to the show?). Carter arrived back in the US and went right to Abby's apartment. He let himself in and walked around her apartment in the dark. He went to her room where she was sleeping and sat on her bed and looked at her. Then it ended.
That's all. I don't like the shows that are away from the hospital. You didn't miss anything significant except that Carter went to Abby when he got home. I'm glad for that.
