Has anyone ever tried making them from scratch? Ive been curious lately, but just kept forgetting to search the net when I would sit in front of the computer. Well, I just got this month's Cooks Illustrated in the mail today and they had a recipe in there. While I tend to think that they can make a simple thing a little more difficult than it really can be, I love the magazine and love love the explainations they give. Anyway...I am asking about it because thier recipe called for a total of 27 table spoons of butter!!!!!!!!!!! Holy Paula Deen! I cant believe it. I plan to sit and explore other recipes soon, but I wanted to ask here. The recipe only made 22 croissants. That just seemed like a lot of butter. Maybe that is the key to them? I dont know. I need to read the article again, and better.

I've never made them, but I do have a recipe that my MIL gave me. It comes from a cook book that used a base mix for recipes, then you add different things for different kinds of bread. My MIL makes them every year for the holidays, and they really are the BEST. Like I said, I've never made them myself, but I can post the recipe if you'd like.

Yes! Especially since she has made them a lot, then I know for a fact it works, lol! I hope it doesnt take 27 tablespoons of butter though, or my hips wont like it much!

Like puff pastry, the croissant uses LOTS of layers of dough kept "lifted" by LOTS of layers of butter.

I'll post the recipe in a bit!

This one isn't very flaky, it tastes more like a roll to me, but they are really good anyway.

lol, no big deal. I still need extra time to just sit and search the net for other recipes. I probably wont find anything I want to make anyway. If it takes that much butter, I just dont think I can do that too myself, lol
