How do YOU boil an egg?

I think in the past week I've heard a hundred different versions of how to boil an egg. I didn't know there could be that many different opinions.

In the book I'm reading (An Everlasting Meal: Cooking With Economy and Grace) the author brings her eggs to the brink of boil and, as soon as she sees the first bubbles, she turns the water off, lets them sit for 4 minutes, then plunges the eggs into ice.

I was taught to bring them to a boil and let them boil for about 5 minutes.

I bought eggs almost a week and a half ago, preparing to make deviled eggs, lol. I do what Karen does. I never have an issue with them being cooked or not, just the stupid peeling, lol! The less fresh, the better luck I have.

I always buy eggs for Easter as early as I can, so they're not too fresh and easier to peel. I've always boiled mine starting with cold water for 10 minutes, then into ice water. I recently read on Taste of home or something like that to take the eggs out of the fridge 30 minutes before boiling to keep them from cracking. I'm going to try that this year.

I guess we're in good shape then - DH came home with a giant box of 2.5 dozen eggs over the weekend, so they should be not-so-fresh by next weekend when we dye them. I'll try taking them out of the fridge in advance. Thanks for the tip!

I myself don't boil them to long 4 minutes. Cooking to long causes the eggs to be green. I don't like green eggs..
I do not plunge them in any water when I am letting them sit..
I also try to have older eggs when I need to peel them..
Eggs in this house don't sit for long...

I have tried so many ways and have been unsuccesful everytime! I will try the tips iVillage provided...I am determined to be able say that I can boil an egg :smileyhappy:
