It's the time of year that I crave soup.

Soup is great in this type of weather... As a weight watcher who watches her waist I make a pot of soup about every other wk.. Garden type
no point or 1 in some of it..
all types of veggies in chicken or beef stock..
I always use onions, celery in the basic then add in other types of
veggies. carrots cabbage, zucchini, green beans and turnips at times.
I love spinach, kale in them also.. Pepper and other seasonings can be use.

Soup with this stuff is filling and not so fattening..
I do make split pea but blend it so its a bit smoother to take.
Bean and Ham is also a good one..
* those alphabets can be saved in a jar I love just eating them with both ...

I looked on allrecipes.com today, and got a good recipe for ham and potato and split pea. I have tried to make homemade split pea, and have never liked the flavor. I think it's the smoked ham hocks I don't like. But this one calls for chicken stock and country ham. I'm going to try this within the next month.

Soup is like Leggos, you just start with one thing and build.

Karen, what do you put in your lentil soup? I have a ham bone & picked up some lentils the other day 'cuz I think DH will eat the lentils, although it has been a long time since I made them. I know he won't eat split pea, although I love it! I used to make a pot & share it with my mom...I don't think I can eat a whole pot by myself, though.

This batch was:

1/2 onion
1 carrot
1 rib celery
3 cups chicken broth
1 clove garlic
1/3 cup lentils
zest of 1 lemon

Everybody into the crock pot, the pool was closed.

I will wait until DD is home from school before I hear the story. It's funny though, thinking about soup, I read "Stone Soup" to DD3 yesterday! She didn't quite get it, but she enjoyed the story anyway. It was a favorite of mine as a kid.

I'm going to stock up on chicken broth, for sure! Brother or stock...what's the difference? And have anyone tried those Swanson flavor packs that has been advertised lately? What about base? My mom always had ham base in her fridge.

Suzan posted a Corn Chowder recipe on Frugal Kitchen that I am in love with. Our whole family raved about it!

I just tried this Chicken Miso Soup the other day and it was pretty good too:

Other than that, I usually just fly by the seat of my pants when making soup. We eat it a LOT in the winter time!

ETA: I dug this up...thought it might help:
