No clue what the problem is, but I did want to say that we replaced our old dishwasher a few months ago, it was not cleaning or draining right.

I do the same as Squeakyone, I use distilled white vinegar instead of the expensive rinse aids, stuff comes out cleaner and drys better too. And also like Squeakyone, I buy the inexpensive store brand gel/liquid dishwasher stuff :)

My dishwasher is only 4 years old (maybe less), but I only use it about twice a week. The water is not hard, it just won't fill.

I tried using white vinegar for years, 'cuz it is cheap & natural (not that I am big on all the Natural stuff), things just never seemed clean, always cloudy. I didn't realize how bad everything was until the first time with the gel pacs -- unbelievable!

Well when our old dishwasher died some years ago and there were only 2 of us left at home I didn't worry about it just tossed the old one and didn't replace it...

But when I needed a new washing machine we went to Sears and while standing there in front of 2 washing machines that looked exactly the same except for the price I asked what the difference was......the sales person said that one was this years model..(this was in Feb......) and the other one was last years model......they were both Maytag.... I mean for $250 less I took last years model......when I turned around and looked at what I was leaning against they had the same thing in a dish washer.....my DH said for the price of that new washing machine we can have both....so that is how I solved the dishwaher problem.....lol
