Do you keep a price book?

It was suggested to me on another board and just seemed like a lot of work, but I think it may be worth it.

Yesterday I was shopping at Walgreens and they had Clean & Clear facial soap on BOGOHO (Buy One, Get One Half Off), plus I had a $2 off coupon. But the price was $5.99 which seemed high (buying 2 at BOGOHO + the $2 off coupon would make them $3.49 each).

This morning I stopped at Walmart for milk and saw that the same C&C product there was only $3.99. So I bought it and paid $1.99 for one.

Long story short, I think I need to make a price book for the things that we typically buy, so that I know how much they cost at each store. Do you have one? Or are you able to keep mental notes of things like that?

I haven't done this but I would like to try. From what I've read you can be as detailed or general as you need to be, as long as you're tracking the same things each time (in terms of quantity/size). Most people I know who have done this say they've not necessarily kept it up forever, because after a while you learn what is a good price, where/when the sales are. I'm going to start just jotting down my most-bought items and go from there with my latest receipts. Then I'm going to compare them to the circulars I got in the mail this week to see where things stand.

on the whole the drugstore prices are really expensive, but when there is a sale I will double check to see who has the lower price.

For instance I had Qs that allowed me to get Kashi Crisp for 1.50 a box, but I had to double check to see if Walmart wouldn't be a better price on its own. 1.88 with Q at Walmart, so I waited and went back to Target. I also factor in whether it's going to be an extra trip, a hassle etc for how much savings. If it's only a few pennies more and I'm not planning to go to the other store again any time soon, I will buy it at the store I'm standing in. Usually I have a good game plan though :)
