Do you take the kids with you, or shop alone?

Can I confess that I hate taking the kids shopping with me when I'm trying to use coupons? I feel like I really need to concentrate to make sure that I'm getting all the deals I planned on getting. Anyone have tips for couponing with kids? Other than, you know, giving them a big bag of candy or something like that? :smileyvery-happy: Do you shop alone or with kids/family?

Well, I have to take the kids with me. I keep hoping that they'll be old enough to leave at home soon. ;-) I usually give the older one the coupons to hunt down for me, while I go over the list to make sure we have everything.

So I JUST posted about this very thing on a FB fan page that my friend Heather and I started for couponing. I find it to be so important to show the kids what I'm doing (and why it's important to let me focus on it, where our money goes, how to save) BUT they really distract the heck out of me.

I rewarded my son for cleaning the house (extra cleaning on top of his chores) with a shopping trip for his school's food drive. In previous years we just went out and bought food and were spending like $100 on donations, but it was for a worth cause so I didn't mind. This time, as a new couponer, I told him that he had $20 to spend tops and he was skeptical and asked if he could have more $ if he cleaned more. I told him that I would do better and teach him how we were going to get just as much food for his $20. We did not buy a single thing for donation that did not have a coupon and at the end of it all he brought his classroom to victory (top 2 classrooms for food donation won a party) with his cans, half of them were from our shopping trip, half was a 'matched' donation from his grandparents. He was amazed and was a believer in couponing. (He is 10 by the way. The 5 year old just says "can we get the snacks without a spoon on it" LOL)

I'll tell you what I loathe more than shopping with my kids, shopping with my husband. I can tell the kids no, but the husbie earns the $.

Later when I get to know all of you much better I'll share a story with you that started to bring my husband around to couponing ;) ;) ;)
