Cupcakes without liners?

Hi everyone. I'm going to attempt to make ice cream cone cupcakes (which I've done before) but am looking at recipes that say to bake them upside down in the pan (fill the pan with batter, put the cone on top). Supposedly the batter will rise into the cone and you'll have a nicely shaped top. However, I don't like the idea of ridged edges since I'm trying to make 'ice cream' so I was wondering if you've all made cupcakes without liners before. I'm of course assuming you're greasing the pan (I actually use wilton cake release) but am wondering how it cooks. I use liners for all my cupcakes/muffins, so this concept is really knew to me. Common sense tells me it would be like a cake in a cake pan, but I just wanted to check and make sure I'm not missing something. :)

Hi! I haven't tried it myself, but I did find this video that shows you how they come out (she's actually making Hostess style cupcakes, so yum!). http://youtu.be/ImZ3FKk1uas?t=4m44s - that brings you right to where she's taking the first one out, but you can start from the beginning if you want. :)

Please share when you're done, I'd love to see them! I've never made them upside either.

I am not much of a baker but I always use liners for cupcakes. I've never tried to make them without so I thought I'd check out the replies and see what everyone has to say.

Thanks, everyone. They ended up pretty great. :) Here's a closeup of them. You can't really see the cone bottom as I have them in a box I made to transport them. :)
