Memphis in May BBQ Cooking Contest!

It's here...it started today!  The Memphis in May International World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest!  I might or might no go to some of it.  Living here, and having competed, I am pressed to see much new each year.  You pretty much know who you will see competing these days.

But on a more somber note, two people who WON'T be there are John Willingham and Don Pelts, both Memphis BBQ legends in their own rights.  Both passed on to the big pig pit in the sky yesterday.  It's sad.  Don Pelts founded Corky's BBQ, which is sold frozen in major groceries today, shipped all over the world, and smoked right here in the river city.  John Willingham was an influential person in the Memphis restaurant association, has a line of BBQ products in grocery stores, and has 4 patents on BBQ smoking equipment.  He was also a strong voice in local politics, and won Memphis In May BBQ twice.  Both will be sorely missed.

John created a vertical smoker.  It is pretty awesome!  The website is down, though....Frown

Are you going to be in the contest Karen?  BBQ sounds divine right now.  This month of May has been the coldest on record.  We usually have the leaves fully out on the trees by now, but no sign of them yet.

Im sitting in bed, looking at food sites and recipes trying to find something yummy to bake.  And now I've gotten myself hungry and its late.  geesh.

I have not been on a cooking team in the contest since the mid-90's.  It's a lot of work and a lot of expense! We did win a few trophies, though.
