Sour Dough Starter project: Day 4!

I finally launched off and did it.  I'm making sour dough starter.  I'm using my home milled Prarie Gold wheat berries, mixed with some boiled and cooled water.  On the first day, I mixed roughly 1/2 cup of flour with 1/2 cup of water, stirred it up and let it stand with a paper towel over it.  It did not seem to do much.  So the second day I just fed it another 1/2 cup each of flour and water.  On the third day, WOW!  It was really taking off!  So I divided it into 2 containers, and even had to pour some off so it would not get too huge, and fed them both.  The second container is for sharing with family and friends.  Yesterday was the fourth day, I poured some off and fed them again.  I can't wait to see what they look like tonight!

What I'm pouring off won't be wasted.  It is hanging out in the refrigerator waiting to become pancakes.  Once the starter is off and running, it will head off to live in the fridge as well, and only be fed once a week.

Have you ever tried making sourdough bread?

I've never made sourdought bread, but I've made Friendship Bread starters.  I kept one going for about a year, made coffecakes every 10 days, and gave excess starters to everyone I know!!

I got a starter from a friend once and followed the instructions but I have never tried starting  it myself. I think this is a really fun thing to do and would love to know how it all turns out.

My starter is living!  I went out of town this past weekend and had to tuck it into the refrigerator for a nap.  But I DID make some sourdough chicken and dumplings with the "discard" last weekend!  That was pretty darned good!  I'm going to find out pretty soon if my sourdough starter is as good as it promises to be.  Problem is, BF doesn't eat bread and I don't eat much of it...but I love to play with bread recipes!

I found several recipes for sourdough cookies, cakes, waffles, biscuits, EVERYTHING!  I will be printing some off for my daughter when I give her the starter that I made for her.  Smile

How's your sourdough these days?  Still hanging around?   I have in the past kept my starter alive

for years & years.  Unfortunately it is gone now, maybe it's time to start more?  Come to think of it,

my son has some in the fridge.

hugs.....

I sort of lost track of my starters and have not fed them in a couple of weeks.  But I used some in the last batch of dog treats that I made and it is still alive.  I don't really know why I started on this effort since I rarely eat bread and neither does my boyfriend.  If I can get organized enough, I would like to make some hamburger buns to keep in the freezer and use as I need them.  I think I saw a recipe for sourdough English muffins, which I would love to toast up at the office for breakfast.  I do eat English muffins!
