Gotta love PBS!
I can't figure out how to embed the video, but you can see it here:
Do you eat squirrels? Where do you get them?
Well, I just plain fried those squirrels. Don't have many squirrels around anymore. Maybe because of too many cats & dogs? That could be a reason. Pesky little things although I have to admit that they are darn cute!
OH MY, this is the South, Everybody hunts! I'm not big on squirrels but chicken will work in this recipe. I just thought it was funny to see that on TV since weird food is pretty much the topic here! I cooked squirrel for my first husband from time to time. But what's in EVERYONE'S freezer here is venison and quail. We had deer steaks last Christmas, to change up from the ham & turkey routine. My son in law wrapped them in bacon and cooked them on the grill in the back yard. I mill flour and cornmeal, and made some incredible dressing with it!
My son in law hunts wild turkey and dove too, and ducks. I now have squirrels because my boyfriend trapped them at his house and brought them down to my neighborhood. They were eating his tomatoes. I didn't think they would stay around because of all the cats and dogs but they did. They like my big oak tree.
We do a lot of fishing here too. Just about everybody has a fish fryer of some sort in their outdoor cooking stuff. For most, it's an inexpensive propane burner and a large steel boiler pot on a turkey fryer stand.
I'll pass on the Squirrel but I did make some chicken enchiladas last night. Took me more than a jar of salsa, I like to make my sauce from scratch starting with sauteing onions. I made a small 8x8 pan so husband and I could have leftovers for another couple of dinners but the son showed up and ate then took the leftover with him. Love that boy, invited him out to breakfast Saturday and he picked up the bill, next time I'm inviting him to a nice fork and knife restaurant that has a wine list.
No squirrels for me, since the red ones here in Sweden is a protected species and we dont have any grey here. Well they red can be greysish red in winter , but the grey American Squirrel is killed on site so we not got the problem of the UK or Italy, yet. And here in this village we have a healthy population of squirrels running around stealing akorns from the jays.
