Chia seeds?

Mel - was it you who uses chia seeds in your smoothies?
I am wondering if you soak them or not (and for how long) and if it makes your smoothies super thick? I was reading a bit online and some people seem to soak them and others not, but they say to drink your smoothie right away so it doesn't thicken up too much. How quickly is "right away"? I am usually done with mine in 15 minutes or so, but Riley can take awhile longer.... don't want to turn him off smoothies.

They are pretty much everywhere now. Not that hard to find at all.
Yup Trader Joe's carries them. So does Whole Foods. They are pretty easy to find most places because they are pretty popular right now. Most grocery stores have them in the health food department. I have even seen them in Target. Not seen them in bulk any place. They are not cheap but a little goes a long way. When you soak them they turn into a tapioca type consistency. I found just putting them into the blender with the rest of what ever I am making my smoothie with and then just letting the whole thing sit for a while works just as well. You can also mix some into yogurt.
I thought my Fred Meyer (Kroger) would have them in the bulk bins, but they didn't. They have a big health food/natural foods section. There was a one pound bag of Bob's Redmill chia seeds, but it was almost twelve bucks, so I didn't get them. I want to be sure we like them before I buy that much. I saw someone mention that they got them in bulk at WinCo. I hate that store, but may try it to see if they have them. I bet Trader Joe's will have them, but they don't have bulk foods. Will look into that if I strike out at WinCo.
Not Mel - but I do put Chia seeds in my smoothies. Sometimes I soak them and sometimes I do not. I happent LOVE the thickness they give. They are so GOOD for you it does not matter if they "explode". I made baked oatmeal yesterday for breakfast today and put some in. Hard to tell any difference. Hope this helps but use them Cara because they are "super" good for you!
