Spare Prayers?

My dad called me Wednesday evening to tell me that my mom had a temp of 104.5 and was awake but not answering questions and acting very confused.  He called the dr. and they told him to call an ambulance so he did.  They took her to the hospital that Amber used to work at, it's where their dr. goes so for insurance to cover they have to go there... even though I have practically begged them to switch to a dr. that comes to MY hospital.

Anyway... she was admitted to ICU and started on blood thinners because she tested positive for a blood clot in her lung.  They also assumed she had an infection too because of the fever so they started her on some heavy duty antibiotics. After doing a bunch of  tests, they have determined that she has a severe UTI and very low enzymes along with the bloodclot.

I was going to head up to the hospital on Wednesday eveining but my dad told me not to... he told me it was late and he would keep me updated.  So, I went on to bed and came in to work yesterday.  About noon I called my mom's room to see how she was feeling and she had a hard time answering my questions and I had to keep asking them over and over and finally when I asked if anyone was there with her, she said, "I want to see you."  So, I asked Rick if I could go and he said of course.  They have really accommodated me when it comes to my mom and her appointments.

Amber drove yesterday so I did not have a car but I asked Ashleigh to come by the hospital and pick me up on her break at 1:30 and we both went up to see my mom.  When I got there, my mom's sister, Ronni, had just got there too and my mom was really out of it.  But, the more they gave her of the potassium and other enzymes, it did seem like she was better.  She was still kind of weird ... doing things like staring at the red dot on the pulse ox thingy on her finger and then sticking it in her mouth like she was going to eat it.... asking if her mom (who passed away 12 years ago) was in the bed with her..... telling the respiratory therapy person that her nurse and her whole family went to church with us (we had no idea where that one came from, none of us knew her) and asking why the nurse, Hiliary, was calling herself Hiliary...  just to name a few.

She had been trying to get out of bed so they had to put a sitter in her room when family or friends were not there and they ended up having to put the pulse ox thing on her toe so she couldn't put it in her mouth.  She had 2 accidents in the bed because we could not get the nurse and then the bedpan under her in time.  My aunt and I both held my mom to the side so the nurse could clean her and change the pads. Sorry to be gross.

When my Aunt Ronni called her yesterday to see if she wanted her to bring anything to the hospital, my mom said "oranges."  So my aunt stopped by the store and picked up a bag.  Later on, my mom asked me wasn't it nice for my Aunt Caren (the one in California) to send her oranges straight from California!  Before I left, Mom asked me to peel her one of those "California Oranges" for her.  She only eats 1 or 2 bites of anything we give her and when she does talk, she just rambes and makes no sense at all .... I know some of you (especially Sandy) understand what i mean when I say that it is not fun to see your mommy confused like that.

I talked to my dad a few hours ago and he said that the bloodclot has already dissolved and they let her get up to go to the bathroom instead of using the bedpan which I know she is glad about.  They had her confined to the bed because they didn't want her to fall, for one thing, and they didn't want that bloodclot to move to her heart or brain.  Dad said she was about the same as last night which was better than when I got up there at 2:00 yesterday.  I think the potassium and the antibiotics are starting to work.  He said she was able to tell the nurses her birthdate, me & Susan's names, our husbands names and all the grandkids including Luke & Presley.  So it sounds like she is better for sure.

I got to thinking last night when we were sitting in Mom's room and I remembered that the Chemo nurses almost did not give her the chemo on Thursday because she had a slight temp but she assured them she was not feeling sick or hurting anywhere at all so they went ahead and gave it to her.  I think that was adding insult to injury... she was already developing that UTI and the chemotherapy was a double whammy.  I sure hope this doesn't make her regret getting the chemo and that she doesn't refuse the other 5 treatments...

So, if you would say a prayer for my mom, we would greatly appreciate it.... I know Q&E prayers rock!!  Love you gals.... a lot....

It is hard to watch your Mom in that state Daisy.  I do feel the UTI is a big cause of everything.  Do they think she might have had a slight stroke?

No, Sandy... her ct of the head was normal. Not sure if she would need some other test to check for a stroke but the ct was normal.

Then she is actually pretty lucky.  Sounds like the fever and the UTI caused her problems and that's an easy fix.
