Every day about 27 million Americans battle the pain and debilitating effects of osteoarthritis (OA). Despite an annual economic toll of approximately $128 billion in medical and indirect costs, the best treatments developed so far provide only temporary pain relief. Oral analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and injectable glucocorticosteroidal may treat pain temporarily. But they do little for long-term pain relief or for slowing progression of the disease....
