Sorry I haven't been around much in the last year but a lot has been happening here.

Our granddaughter came from Sweden to live with us in January and her parents followed in May.  It's stressful having so many people in the house and our diet is suffering.

I had knee replacement on August 1 and I'm slowly healing.  Walking with a cane now and able to lift my leg on my own without pain but it's feeling swollen and achy.  A week after surgery I was in the ER with an infection in the incision but an IV of antibiotics and 10 days of oral and I'm back on the mend.  Doc said we caught it early and it didn't get into the deep tissue or to the bone.  I also had a painful red circle on my shin that the homecare nurs and PT were concerned about so the ER did an ultrasound and finally diagnosed it as cellulitis.

Been keeping my blood sugars between 90-110 to help healing since I know the higher glucose levels will slow everything down.

PT has been coming to the house 3 times a week and we're now walking outside about 2-3 blocks each time so that's good.

How's everyone here doing?

This board has been very quiet, probably due to the problems getting on and also problems posting messages.  I have given up several times trying to post when board alleges my comments violate profanity rules.   Either my dog's name  or the name I post under are considered unacceptable.

For that reason won't put either in this post.

As for me my glucose numbers have stayed really good.  Other numbers not so much so.  Doing what I can and trying to get back on since i fell off the turnip truck(exercise) again!!

Sounds like you are doing very well considering everything you have to deal with!!  Glad to hear that!!

Hi Dee,

Glad to see you around here. It looks like you are doing better. I had some minor surgery done and I wasn't supposed to do anything strenuous afterwards so I didn't go to the gym. Finally got my stitches out and that very day I can down with a terrible sore throat which has now landed in my chest. On Tuesday it will be three weeks since I was last at the gym. I am hoping that I can get back any day if I finally feel better. I haven't been this sick since before my heart surgery. Quite frustrating.

How long do you think your family is going to be staying with you? I am glad that you have been able to keep your blood sugar down where it belongs. I am also glad they caught the infection early but you understand all this too well. Just keep walking as best you can and soon you will be walking without much pain or your cane.

Please let us know how you are progressing.

Hope you're better and able to get to the gym soon Maryfrancis.

Last week the therapist said I didn't need to use the cane around the house but to keep it close if I go out.  Since then I haven't gone anywhere but the cane is where I left it, on the floor next to my bed.  I had a migraine for 2 days so haven't done anything but stay in bed with ice packs on my head and today the therapist came out and we walked outside without the cane. He commented that there's a lag with my right leg when walking (surgery was on my left).  This means my left leg is working wonderfully.

Another therapist is coming on Friday to release me and get an order for outpatient therapy.  I just have to decide where I want to go for that.  There's a stand alone therapy center I went to before that's closest to the house than the one in the docs office.  There's also one in both hospitals (we live about half way between the 2).  I'm leaning toward the stand alone center.  The therapist was slow to recommend one over the other but did say he felt I'd get more individualized care or attention at a stand alone center.

Family will probably be here a couple of years.  Son-in-law is finishing his GED classes and needs to go for the test.  Stepdaughter just got a job at Walmart.  It's part time right now but at least it's an income.  We had her apply for food stamps and if she can take over most of the grocery shopping that will free up money to pay the excess in utilities that they're causing.  We only asked that they pay the excess as well as their car insurance.  Right now we're paying for Joslynn's school breakfast and lunches but with her mom being on food stamps she qualifies for free meals.  She still needs $1 a day for a snack.
