Does anyone know anything about how to get your insurance company to pay for your gym membership if you have diabetes? A couple of people at my gym say they have heard it can be done but no one knows how to go about getting it done. Thanks for the help.

Some insurance companies, primarily HMO's, will pay for gym membership for diabetics. I don't know if this will change for the better or the worse with the Afoordable Care Act. You just need to contact your insurance company and ask them if this is a covered subject. It would require a doctor's order for it to be covered. This is a great question and please let us know what you find out.

My mother participates in a program called Silver Sneakers at her local gym. Many of her classmates get their fees paid for by their insurance company. Call the benefits department of your insurance company to find out what kind of things they cover. Often, you don't get what is due from insurance companies simply because you didn't ask.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Brenda,

I know when I was going to Curves that they accepted the Silver Sneaker's program. But it is three years since I dropped out of Curves so I don't know what their present policy is. Thanks for making this suggestion.

Here is a link to the Silver Sneakers plan.  you can search by state to see if your health insurance plan includes it.  You must be 65 to get in one of the programs i believe.

If it is included, there are a LOT of places that accept silver sneakers program.

It depends on your insurance.  I'm 55 and I belong to Silver Sneakers, I'm on SSDI and on Medicare, I got it through Humana which is my Medicare Replacement.
