June 2-8 is Sun Safety Week. Here are facts to help you keep safe in the sun and still have fun.

Insect repellants reduce sunscreen’s SPF by up to 1/3, so you’ll need to increase your sunscreen’s SPF when using a combination.

99% to 100%:
Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UV rays.

On average, children get three times more UV exposure than adults.

One blistering sunburn can double a child’s lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.

Adults should use a sunscreen product with an SPF of at least 15.

Children should use a sunscreen product with an SPF of at least 30.

This is so important! I know more people my age (over 50) with skin cancer that it is very scary. We knew nothing about protection when I was a kid and now people are paying the price. It is so preventable that I really hope young people are paying attention.

You are so right. I almost never went out into the sun because when I get sunburned I get sick. I run a fever and get dehydrated. But I have had squasmous cell carcinomas taken off my face and a melanoma taken off my shoulder. I had a young workmen at my house last week and I had a discussion with him about wearing sunscreen because he works outside. He was back today and his face was highly sunburned. I felt like the discussion I had with him last week feel on deaf ears! Quite frustrating!!
