Why does everyone assume obese people have diabetes?
Mon, 04-01-2013 - 10:46am

Maybe I'm just too sensitive because I am very overweight but I get very tired of people assuming I have diabetes. I don't! I want to know why everyone would assume I did? My mother constantly asks me if I have checked my sugar lately. Why would I?? I don't have any reason to.

I am just venting so please forgive me. I just want to let people know that not everyone who is overweight has diabetes.

No, not everyone who is overweight is diabetic. Does your dr check you for diabetes at all? It is recomended that it be done starting at 45.

From the American Diabetes Association...

Myth: If you are overweight or obese, you will eventually develop type 2 diabetes.

Fact: Being overweight is a risk factor for developing this disease, but other risk factors such as family history, ethnicity and age also play a role. Unfortunately, too many people disregard the other risk factors for diabetes and think that weight is the only risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Most overweight people never develop type 2 diabetes, and many people with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or only moderately overweightm the American Diabetes Society...

If you would like to take a risk test you can find one at the American Diabetic Association.  http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/prevention/diabetes-risk-test/?loc=DropDownDB-RiskTest Taking this test might answer questions for you and if you do not have a high risk, you will have that info next time someone says something.

In my case,  I was thin until I injured my(gad it strikes again)  bad leg as a child,  very bad cut that i still have a huge scar from about 60 years later).  Ended up having surgery on it due to complications. After that I always was heavy, and remember being told by my mother and my doctor that I was going to get diabetes because I was fat!!  I never got down to "normal weight"  and all the doctors I have had usually checked quite regular to make sure I did not become diabetic.  Probably why in my case mine did get caught faster than a lot of people's.  Also may be why being told I had diabetes did not upset me as much as it would most people.

I have noticed so often that a lot of friends and others who become diabetic later in life are not overweight, and seem to be in serious trouble before it is caught.
