Is there a blood test for Fibromyalgia? If not, How do they determine if you have it? Thanks

I wish there was a blood test, but sadly, there isn't.  It's more a process of elimination; you  get tested for arthritis, lupus, anemia, etc.  If all of that is negative, then you may be referred to a specialist, such as a rheumatologist or neurologist.  At some point, you will have someone give you a Tender Point Test.  This is an explaination of that:  http://www.fmnetnews.com/fibro-basics/diagnosis

It can REALLY hurt to have a doc press on all these points!  My Chinese med doc will sometimes do acupuncture on some of them, which actually does improve my symptoms, but to find the right spot, he'll press down and nearly bring me to tears at times.  There isn't any other diagnostic tool available yet, so it can take a while to get a diagnosis.  Since FM can mirror a lot of other things, like Lupus, MS, RA, anemia, depression, etc, it can take years for some people to be diagnosed, which is pretty depressing when you think about it.  BUT, don't dispair!  If you feel that it is likely you DO have FM, talk to your doc.  If she isn't comfortable diagnosing you, have her refer you to someone who is more familiar with fibro.  It's important to rule out some of the more serious disease first, then to get started on a treatment plan and find what works best for you.  The sooner you know what you're dealing with, the sooner you can work towards feeling better.  However, there are some things you can do right away that will start to help you no matter what the docs find, such as starting a gentle exercise program, eating a healthy diet, getting into a good sleep routine, and finding effective ways to deal with stress.
