Do You Really Need an Annual Physical?

According to some health experts, maybe not. According to this iVillage Health article, "Yearly physicals for healthy people aren’t just unnecessary -- they're a waste of money, according to a 2007 Archives of Internal Medicine study. “There’s not a lot of evidence to suggest that annual checkups save lives,” says Dana Simpler, M.D., a primary care physician with Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore." What do you think? Do you get an annual physical?

No, I don't get annual physicals.  I just stay monitored for specific things.  I don't even know what they include in a physical.  I guess they do some stuff for pre-op appointments but I would relate more to the article that suggests monitoring for the various conditions rather than a general physical.  My new doctor did suggest a physical at some point but I'm going to try and avoid it.

I tend to disagree...I feel annual exams are VERY necessary. I have had too many friends being diagnosed with breast cancer that would not have been detected had they not gone in for their annual exams. Plus family and friends with other issues that need to be monitored and maintained with annual visits. I for one will go every year like clock work and I don't care what they say.

I agree with tweety. Too often if you wait until something is hurting or you've discovered on your own that something is wrong with your body, it's much harder to treat it. I have an annual physical. Through my annual physicals several medical issues have been discovered. I agree with it, but I think everyone has to do what they're comfortable with.

While I don't think an annual physical is necessary for someone who is healthy and doesn't have a history of anything that requires annual monitoring I think there are certain things that should be checked via other means. For example I think we should all have our blood pressure checked annually, but you don't need to schedule an annual physical for that. Most drug stores offer it and nearly every type of medical doctor has the ability to do it. So if you're going to go to a gyno, dentist, eye doctor, etc you can probably do it there. I also think an annual weight check is a good idea, but we can all do that ourselves at home. Annual std screening should also be done, but again there are plenty of more affordable ways to do that other than an annual physical.
