I don't get Autism

Hi. My friend's 4 year old was just diagnosed with Autism. It comes as no surprise to her because she's been saying since he was a baby that he was not right and something was wrong. I am not sure I understand what it is that she is saying is wrong with him. Honestly he seems like a very misbehaved brat. He is perfectly well behaved until someone tells him no then all heck breaks loose. She has to give him everything he wants or he will throw the loudest (and very embarrassing) tantrum. I want to support her in this but really am not sure what to do. I personally feel if she were to discipline him in a more effective way he would be fine. What is it that I am missing?

Here is an article that may help: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002494/ One of the symptoms it lists for autism is "Acts up" with intense tantrums. I am sure your friend has noticed other things that disturbed her about her son.

I am sure some testing was done to arrive at the diagnosis. Do you know who she got the diagnosis from?

She is no doubt very much in need of your support. The more information you can find and read about autism, the more you will be able to understand and support her in what is going on.

There is a great book "How to Be Human, Diary of an Autistic Girl" by Florida Frenz that explains some of the issues that children with autism deal with. It is a must-read for anyone who would like to understand more about autism.
