Severe Flu Season Feared
| Fri, 01-04-2013 - 10:19am |
According to Health Day News, flu cases are on the rise across the U.S. "In Chicago, a hospital employee describes the emergency department as "knee-deep in flu and pneumonia cases."
In Richmond, Va., Dr. Kenneth Lucas of the Patient First clinic says he's seen a 30 percent rise in flu cases, which "hit the fan around Christmastime" and "really rolled in with the holidays."
And in Rhode Island, where almost 10 percent of emergency room visits in the past week were due to flu-like symptoms, state Health Department Director Michael Fine predicts this could be the worst flu season in years." MORE
Has the flu hit your area yet? Did you get a flu vaccine?
Fingers crossed, knock on wood... The flu doesn't seem to have hit here, yet at least as far as I can tell. Usually by this time, one of the kids, grandkids, neighbors or co-workers have had it... but so far, nada. Maybe because it's been so miserable and wet, people aren't venturing far from home lately. With school starting back here Monday, that's all liable to change, though.Â
I got a flu vaccine when they first came out back in September. I was waiting for a prescription at Walgreens and decided to get one while I was there. I am so glad I did it because the flu has hit my town very hard. I know so many people out with it right now and heard someone in one of my classes say the ER is full everynight of people with the flu.

I haven't really heard of many around here with the flu, yet. I got my shot in October at the Health Department. My doctor told me later I should have come to him because he has the extra strength version for seniors (I didn't know there was such a thing!) Noted for next year.
I have never heard of an extra strength version. I need to remember that.
The flu is in full swing here too. My whole family got a shot so hopefully we will be spared the worst of it. After my bought with the flu several years ago, I always get my flu shot. I like to have never recovered and found out the hard way how it killed so many people back in the early 1900s.
It seems that since I posted that last, just a few days ago, the flu is really hitting around here. Hospital emergency rooms are full. The strain we are getting seems to be one of the more severe ones.
