Tonsillectomy done in adults
| Wed, 10-31-2012 - 9:50am |
I have recently went to a ear, nose and throat doctor because I am having extreme daytime fatigue. It has been very hard to stay awake many days. Someone mentioned having their tonsils and adnoids removed due to what is called, Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) which is some sort of airway obstruction of the soft palate. The blockage can be thickened soft tissue in the back of the mouth or back of the nose. (I am trying to remember exactly how the dr. explain this).
Has anyone ever heard of this? Has anyone had their tonsils and/or other tissue removed in surgery as an adult? I know there are many risks involved in this type of surgery, so I am trying to get some thoughts or opinions about this.
Thank you!!

Hi Tracy,
Thanks for your response. No, I was not diagnosed yet with sleep apnea. I had a sleep study a few months ago and the dr. told me that in the 6 hours I was in bed for the study, I never hit deep sleep or he said REM sleep. He asked me if I remember dreaming, I said no. I dream at home all the time?!?! He was not foresure what to do, he refered me to a ENT dr. I did not go ealier then last week (to ENT) because I thought he didn't know what he was talking about. I was wrong. Then, DH did some research and we learned I should see a ENT as he recommended. At this point, I saw ENT dr. first time last week. He was going to get my sleep study results, then call me back for another dr. visit.
ENT did say he can see much blockage in my nose and tonsils. Yes, he did, at length, tell me all the risks of surgery. He said ENT dr.'s are often sued (sp?) by patients after surgery because of later complications. He said he will not jump too taking out my tonsils, adnoids or even more tissue in that area, without more information and possibly another sleep study to compare results before any surgery.
Does that make sense?
(this has been occuring for over a year)
Thanks,
We discussed it for a few minutes for my DH with our ENT when we took our middle one in to have her adenoids removed. Have you been diagnosed with sleep apnea or anything, has this been going on for a long time or is it a more recent development? Do you get frequent ear infections or have allergy issues also? I know I was told by the ENT and also by many others that the complication rate and recovery time for a tonsillectomy in adults is dignificantly more intense than that of children. Have you tried different ways of sleeping, side or stomach, to help with blockage?
Also, another unconventional way to treat may be to visit a chiropractor who specializes in upper cervical chiropractic care. Here is a link with some good articles/references that can explain it a bit more, but it essentially is where the neck is misaligned and can then interfere with the ability to breath while laying down (asleep).
