Can a cat have allergies?

One of my cats seems to develop a cold every summer and my husband thinks he has allergies and might need allergy meds. I have never heard of a cat having allergies and can't imagine trying to give allergy meds to a cat every day. Can they have allergies and how can you tell?

I haven't heard of a cat getting "hay fever" but they do get other kinds of allergies---to foods and to fleas are evidently pretty common, but I think those cause itchy skin rather than respiratory symptoms. Does the cat go outdoors? Have you asked the vet about it?

There's a board about cats with a couple of people who seem pretty knowledgeable:

My mother's dog has allergies and the vet thinks she is allergic to something in my mother's house. She doesn't take meds other than when her eyes get really gooey and runny.

Your vet can take a blood test and send it off to the lab where the blood will be tested against various allergens. If its only seasonal symptoms, you can probably skip the tests and work with your vet regarding meds to relieve symptoms. If they get worse, there's allergy injections or a new type of allergy drops.
