My mother has just been told she going to need a hysterectomy for firbrod tumors. Can you tell me what is going to happen to her and what we should expect? Will I need to go stay with her for a while? She lives by herself.

Thank you for any information you can offer.

A hysterectomy is when they take the uterus out. You should stay with her for a week or two until she feels better.

Hi Jenn! A hysterectomy is major surgery, no matter how she has it. The different methods each take a longer recouperation time. IF it is abdominal, she will not be allowed to go up steps, vacumn, left anything over 5 pounds, drive, etc for about 6 weeks. If it is done laproscopy the time may be shorter. Since she lives alone, it would be better if you could go stay with her for a few days or more....

When is your mom having the surgery? Please let us know how she does!

I bumped up a list of what you can and can't do after hysterectomy...  If you have any questions, please post! We will try to help as best we can!

Hello, Jenn.  I have a page at our Menopause Oasis that can give you some basic information about the various kinds of hysterecomies that can be performed; along with some tips on the "before" and "after" needs of the patient.  Please check it out.  Just follow  t to take you directly to that page.

Please know that you are welcome here anytime ~ to ask questions, to vent (it really does help!), to share experiences, or to just hang out with other women who understand and care....

There are NO dumb questions when it comes to Menopause
