Hi I'm new to ivillage, I have been told I'm experiencing peri menopause, and I'm

wondering if it's common to have abdominal bloating for a very prolonged period of time..

the bloating doesn't come and then subside as when I had regular periods, it stays, and

sometimes I get so distended it feels like it effects my breathing... feels like i'm blown up

like a baloon from just beneath my bra, all the way down... the only thing I thought of to do

is cut down on sodium... has anyone else experienced this, and any ideas?

You did not mention how old you are, Michelle, but if you are past your thirtieth birthday you could well be experiencing the symptoms of peri-menopause. At our Menopause Oasis we have a list of nearly 60 "common symptoms" related to this time of life.  Three of them are:
   19. Weight Gain (especially around your waist and abdomen)
   52. Water retention
   53. Bloating (swollen ankles or feet or elsewhere in the body)

Believe it or not, drinking lots of water may be the biggest help because it can do wonders for your digestive system by flushing out any toxins. A glass of water can be a temporary quick fix for bloating.

Be careful what else you drink. Alcohol and caffeine can have an adverse affect on your digestive system, particularly if taken in quantity or regularly.   And keep active, exercise helps rid the body of retained fluids.

If the bloating is due to poor bowel function (gassy) then please consider adding some fiber to your diet in the form of whole grains, which are rich in heart-healthy fiber, as well as fruits and vegetables.

If it should continue for much longer a visit to your doctor may be in order.

Please know that you are welcome here any time - to ask questions, to share experiences, or to vent (it can help!!!).

Remember, there are NO dumb questions regarding menopause!

HI thanks for the info.. I'm 47 and doctor is certain i'm going through perimenopause.

I do regularly drink lots of water and exercise.... and I eat fiber... but I do drink lots of coffee..

I think i'll try cutting down on caffiene and see what happens.. also when my abdomen bloats I

get breast tenderness and sometimes pressure on my bladder that's why I figured it was due to

the perimenopause and not the irrirable bowel syndrome....

Sounds as if you are on the right track, Michelle.  Breast tenderness is very definitely effected by caffeine.   Please keep us posted on how things go for you.
