I'm posting about my MIL because I'm concerned about advice she's receiving from her doctors. She's always had issues with GERD and her thyroid, and is on medications to deal with both. Her doctor diagnosed her with leaky gut last fall, and she's been a very strict diet after seeing an allergist. I'm not sure all that they found her allergic or intolerant to, but she was put on a dairy and gluten free diet, along with being told to avoid this looong list of food items such as blueberries. She just saw the allergiest again a couple of weeks ago and he wanted to take her off of all fruit and sugar, which now has her questioning his suggestions. Even her regular doctor is very confused by it all.
For those of you that have dealt with leaky gut, what type of restrictions were you on?

I have never heard of it before but it sounds horrible. What kind of symptoms does your MIL have?
Leaky gut syndrome seems to be one of those "new" dignoses that are not well understood and have had little definitive research done as yet. I would be curious about your MIL's symptoms and how the diagnosis was arrived at. It does seem to be commonly recommended to avoid gluten and highly processed foods, but I saw nothing to indicate that blueberries or other fruits should be a problem, although some sources did mention avoiding processed sugars.
I can't remember what tests they performed to get the diagnosis. I did have a good talk with her the other night, she's feeling so much better after being on the gluten free diet. The doctor said no sugar because they discovered that she has too much yeast in her body, and sugar obviously feeds it even more. They also put her on strong medication for it, and she's feeling tons better. For over a year she's been having severely swelled legs and ankles, it's been going on for a very long time. She's had tests run, ultrasounds, etc and they couldn't find the problem. Since getting on the new diet and finding the yeast problem, she has no swelling whatsoever. She couldn't even remember when the last time she's had skinny ankles. Once they get the yeast under control, she should be able to have sugar in her diet, but will be sticking with the gluten free. She should be able to go back on most fruit as well.
I am glad to hear she is feeling better. I did see somewhere a connection between yeast overgrowth and leaky gut. It is good that her doctor picked up on that. I hope she will continue to improve.
