Norovirus, known as the cruise-ship stomach bug, is not killed by dishwashing according to this Health Day News article. "Commercial dishwashers can kill everyday bacteria but not norovirus, the cause of stomach flu and many foodborne illnesses around the world, according to a new study.

Although restaurant-industry guidelines for cleaning dishes and silverware eliminate bacteria, they are not effective against norovirus, said researchers from Ohio State University. They found the virus can withstand both manual and mechanical washing" MORE

My friends think I am crazy but I won't eat at buffets because of the cruise ship problems. This just reinforces my stand on not eating at buffets! In my opinion, It only takes one person with the norovirus to get a hold of the utensils and suddenly half a town could be dealing with it.

Well, from the article that Karla linked, it sounds like you could get the virus at any restaurant, not just a buffet. It is kind of scary, really, to think that the commercial dishwashers and the sanitation protocols are not effective in getting rid of the virus!
