People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are often at higher risk for developing osteoporosis or osteopenia, both because of the disease itself and because of the steroids that are often used to treat flareups. It is recommended that patients with IBD be monitored for changes in bone density, yet not all are being tested appropriately. You may want to ask your doctor about having a DEXA scan to determine your bone density.
