Stressing over junk-actual junk

My husband and I embarked on a mission to go through the basement, garage, and shed and sort through decades of junk. I never really even noticed it before as I could always just pitch stuff in one of them and walk away. Now to really take a good look at the mountain of junk is really stressing me out. I have even dreamed about all the stuff the last two nights. I don't even know what most of it is or why we saved it. I'm ready to close the doors and just ignore them again. Help!

I can completely relate!  My parents have went through this, their basement and garage are just filled with junk, mostly stuff my mom just can't seem to let go of, or stuff us kids have left at their house over the years.  Now that my youngest brother just moved out of the house they have decided to slowly start cleaning it all out and making repairs to the house.  They set aside a bit of time each day/week and concentrate on one area in small increments so that they do'nt get too overwhelmed at once.  My mom has an issue with feeling like things will be used again in the future, for example my oldest is 18 and going off to college, but they found a tote of her toddler clothes.  My mom's reasoning on not throwing it away is that my youngest brother is getting married in 2 weeks "what if they have a baby girl soon and need the clothes".  sigh.  The clothes are 16 years old and smell musty from being in their basement for so long.  I have told her that if she can't bare to throw it away, then at least just take it to goodwill and let other's decide if they want it.
