Should the drinking age be lowered to 19?

I was reading an article today about Duke University and it's problem with underage drinking. The author was suggesting that lowering the drinking age to 19 would help curb binge drinking by college students by letting them learn to drink responsibly earlier in life.

I have always thought the drinking age should be the same as legal adulthood (18) and honestly see no reason why it shouldn't be. I am just curious as to your experience and if you think it would have made a difference in your life if the drinking age had been lowered.

Actually when I was in college, the drinking age was 18.  Professors would have wine & cheese receptions with students.  There were keg parties in dorms of course but because I don't like beer I didn't drink just to fit in--I'd bring my own can of diet soda.  I grew up in an Italian-American household where drinking was not considered a big deal and if you wanted a glass of wine you could have it.  Therefore when i went to college, I didn't really see the fascination in drinking.  There have been a lot of college presidents who feel that the drinking age should be lowered since right now it's really only pushing drinking underground.  When my DD was in college, she still drank when she was below legal age and I was actually very relieved when she turned 21 because then at least I didn't have to worry about her being arrested.  I think part of growing up should be to learn how to drink alcohol responsibly.

Yet I also read of a study that determined that since the drinking age was raised, there have been fewer deaths by drunk driving, etc.  But I wonder if it is also that people are now more aware of not driving drunk and will use designated drivers, take a taxi, etc.  Back when I was young, no one ever mentioned designated drivers & stuff like that.

It is said that eighteen year olds cannot handle alcohol, due to too many mistakes. In today's society, alcohol is always going to be an issue, regardless of age.
