How did you cope?

For those who are the family and friends of addicts, how did you cope with watching your loved one self-destruct? What, if anything, were you able to do to help?

I had something on my side.  I am Catholic, and in my community lives a priest who himself has been in recovery for over 50 years.  It is his ministry to help other addicts.  The turning point came when we were running out of money because DH was spending everything on booze.  I got scared and called this priest (who I fully trust) to ask him what to do.  He talked to DH, got him going to AA, eventually became his sponsor, and now?  Two weeks ago, my DH got his six month chip!  Things are not perfect now by a long shot, but they are so much better.  So far, this has been a great year.

You know, unlike many people in the same position, I did not go for years watching DH self distruct.  While he was drinking, somehow I got it in my head that if I ignored the problem, it would go away, or wasn't really a problem to begin with.  It didn't dawn on me until about a year ago that there was really a problem.  I started going to al-anon.  I ultimately decided al-anon was not for me, but I do like it here, and everyday I support my DH as much as I can in not drinking.
