She is removing both breasts as a preventative measure to reduce her chances of developing the disease that killed her mother, grandmother and great aunt." read more
This woman is in her 20s. Does this seem too drastic a step to you? Would you encourage her to get this procedure done? Why or why not?
Obviously, this is not a decision anyone would make without serious consideration, consultation, research and personal reflection. if she has chosen to do this, then she has decided it is the appropriate decision. We should support her.
I, too, watched my MIL die of breast cancer, and believe me, it was nothing I'd want to see someone else suffer from. I took care of her at the end of her fight, and it left a permanent mark of awareness of how horrible the disease can be.
If my mother, grandmother and I all died of breast cancer, I would urge my daughters before I passed to do everything possible to fight against even getting the disease. I would not be at all against them (and they are young) taking drastic preventative measures.

I saw that on the news and I felt so bad and sad for her.. and I am not her but not sure about it all.
I do realize that if she is only 24 why does she have to do it so young? How do we know what is down the pike about our lives or what cure or whate invention will come out. I do think its pretty radical and now she will go through a host of bad side effects right?
I also hope she get tested for the gene just in case and I would think if that breast cancer gene is positive then it would be a good idea but if not she might have a chance at not getting cancer.
A woman I know who is in her fifties is supposedly using hemp and green drinks and other things to try and cure her boob bug (Cancer) or that is what she calls it.. The doctors told her she would be dead in six months and its now a year later and she is still around. She wont get any su rgery nor her boob removed.. who knows what can happen??
Had I not watched my mother-in-law die of breast cancer I would have said this was too drastic. But I was there with her every step of the way and I pray I never have to go through what she did. This poor young woman has probably seen far more misery and suffering than any of us can imagine and is most likely doing the right thing in having this procedure done.
If she didn't have a family history, I would say it was a drastic measure but her mom, grandmother, and great aunt DIED from breast cancer. I absolutely think she's making the right choice. And I love that even as a pageant contestant, she's willing to do this- even if she wins!
